Every supply diffuser, return grille and linear slot vent in your ceiling sits at the end of a duct, and the air that passes through it carries fine dust. On humid days, especially in homes near the sea, cold air leaving the vent can also cause condensation on the surrounding ceiling, which catches even more dust.
Grilles first, then decide
Washing grilles on their own is a small job, but it is also a good way to find out what is behind them. With the vent removed, the company can vacuum the duct opening, and with a small inspection camera look a metre or two further in. If the duct is clean, you may not need anything more. If it is lined with dust, you know that a full AC duct cleaning is worth booking.
How the job is done
The team switches off the AC, protects the floor and furniture under each vent, and takes the grilles down. They wash them, dry them and refit them. Linear slot diffusers, common in newer apartments and villas, are cleaned slot by slot or removed where the fixing allows. Selected ducts are checked with a camera and you are shown the result.

When the grilles look black
Dark spots on and around grilles can be dust, condensation stains or mould. You cannot always tell from a photo. If you are unsure, ask for mould inspection and cleaning rather than scrubbing it yourself, and have the coil checked through AC coil cleaning.
